    ## Advisor Style & Mentorship
Dr. Jarrett expects a lot of results from highly UN-PRACTICAL hypothesis. MOST of his research ideas he provides to you are COMPLETELY USELESS to run experiments on because you know for sure it will LIKELY FAILED & WILL BE A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME to do that project he proposed. But sadly, Dr. Jarrett still DEMANDS you to do that project he assigns you & DEMANDS that you get the results. But if the results FAILED (& will LIKELY FAILED anyway), he will NEGLECT YOU & will NOT take you seriously as his student.

    ## Expectations for PhD Students
Dr. Jarrett wants his students to have FULL KNOWLEDGE of BIOCHEMISTRY SUBJECTS (even though, you did NOT take any classes to learn more). His expectations are NOT PRACTICAL & UNREALISTIC!!! He also expects that whatever he assigns you, you get the GOOD RESULTS overnight. Again, VERY UNREALISTIC. But if you unable to fulfill those UNREALISTIC expectations of his, he’ll just neglects & abandons you. If you are NOT in your ABD status, especially if you are in the Comprehensive Exams Candidacy Stage still, he can figure out ways to fail you in your classes or the comprehensive exams, especially if he did not get impress at you.

    ## Funding & Support
Funding is INSUFFICIENT since 2017. Before 2017, most of the funding came from the National Science Foundation, where the funding did enable many graduate students to be on RA & NOT have to do TA (especially during the critical Summer Sessions). Sadly after 2017, this funding is depleted & no new funding take over & resulted majority of the graduate students working for Dr. Jarrett to end up doing TA year-round.

    ## Research
Research Project mostly focuses about Radical S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine Enzymes, especially Biotin Synthase. HOWEVER, because of the study of Biotin Synthase in Dr. Jarrett’s Research Lab, the Biotin Biosynthetic Pathway is also another research project of interest in his lab, as well as byproducts produced from the Biotin Biosynthetic Pathway (such as 5’-deoxyadenosine & it’s potential degradation pathways). These projects mostly involves working with pathogenic bacteria (since it’s mostly found in pathogens).

    ## Lab Culture
TOXIC Lab Culture!!! Especially during the time when I was his student from 2015-2018. Most other Masters & PhD Students working for him have TOXIC behavioral problems such as arrogance as well as gossiping. I agree with this other commentator here, Lab is Divided, especially when I was his student. Bullying & other forms of workplace harassment is inevitable among grad students & Dr. Jarrett is irresponsible in not managing a Workplace Friendly Environment. Guarantee his lab is a TOXIC place to go to work. Guarantee, you will struggle with this. If not careful, you may end up victimized by others in the lab bully you by social isolation & spreading of negative gossip.

SUMMARY: Dr. Jarrett is NOT a good mentor to pursue your Masters or PhD in Chemistry degree in. Many of his research ideas are NOT PRACTICAL & UNREALISTIC. In addition, his lab culture is TOXIC & Dr. Jarrett is NOT responsible for keeping order in his lab. He also has a bad habit of LYING: he promises that you graduate at a certain date, but when that certain date came, he delay your graduation. Another LYING issue: he promises that one of the works you did will get published by him, but actuality: NOTHING HAPPENED! He takes forever to respond to your emails & if he did respond to your emails, he is NOT CLEAR of the mission objectives for your thesis or dissertation project. I STRONGLY recommend to please do NOT select Dr. Jarrett to be your thesis or dissertation advisor, because you will LIKELY either drop out of the Masters or PhD Program OR you will LIKELY take a LONG TIME to finish up your degree because Dr. Jarrett is NEGLECTFUL. Therefore, please do NOT choose Dr. Jarrett to be your PI, for in my experience & in my opinion, he's NOT a good PI.

No, I don't recommend this PI.

If you took that CHEM 372 class (Bio-Organic Chemistry) with Dr. Joseph T. Jarrett, you can see he’s a very good teacher. In fact, Rate My Professor of him is correct regarding him teaching a class very professionally (but seems to be only for CHEM 372).

HOWEVER, if you are planning to have Dr. Joseph T. Jarrett for a Research Mentor for your master’s or PhD Degree, I’m sorry to say, but Dr. Jarrett is NOT a very good Research Mentor. He really needs improvement regarding how to supervise graduate students working in his research lab.

From what I experienced when I used to work for Dr. Jarrett’s Research Group, I saw average to get a master’s degree with his mentorship would be 5+ years (instead of the actual nationwide average of 2-3 years). PhD is worse: it takes an average of 7+ years (instead of the actual nationwide average of 4-5 years) to get a PhD in his lab.

Dr. Jarrett has a problem regarding about he easily **NEGLECTS** his students. He also can **SELECT FAVORITES** (which is a subtle act of **DISCRIMINATION** & **ABUSE**) where his favorite grad student would receive “special treatment”, whereas everyone else working for him will be expendable. In fact, there happens to be 1 student Dr. Jarrett did have a favorite & because he gave her Special Treatment, she able to graduate on-time with her PhD within 4-5 years. Everyone else, Dr. Jarrett neglects. Those whom Dr. Jarrett neglects, they either drop out of the Masters/PhD Program OR takes WAY TOO LONG to complete their Masters or PhD degree. I also heard stories that 1 PhD Student who works for him did file a COMPLAINT REPORT to the University Dean regarding about his NEGLIGENCE; the result was the Dean did successfully help that PhD Student get his degree, but it did result in a Toxic Relationship to escalate between him & Dr. Jarrett.

Dr. Jarrett has no regard to your mental health & well-being. Should a toxic situation arise in his lab (such as dispute between graduate students), Dr. Jarrett doesn’t do anything to mitigate the situation… There were cases of bullying & harassment in his lab. His lab is DIVIDED & NO UNITED!!! Grad Students can bully & harass each other by spreading Negative Gossip & Social Isolation. Once again, Dr. Jarrett is IRRESPONSIBLE to stop this situation from happening & instead he let the Negative Situation ESCALATE!

The Biggest Issue about Dr. Jarrett is that he is an Arrogant Narcissist who has no regards to the well-being of his students. Guarantee if you work for him for your Master's or PhD, you may either take TOO LONG to finish OR you just want to quit or drop out.

Therefore, please avoid this professor & select another professor to do your Masters or PhD.

No, I don't recommend this PI.
