## Advisor Style & Mentorship I will be honest; I did not have a strong relationship with Dr. Bayrak. We were not very involved, however, that was VERY OKAY. He has hired a very large research team that allows you to be successful. You will have a post doc to help on a technical front, you have lab staff members that will help in fabrication and testing in the lab, you will have a research coordinator who helps with ordering materials and generic UT stuff, and a research engineer who can help with all other things. These people work specifically for Dr. Bayrak and thus those resources are just for you! However, when I did need Dr. Bayrak, he was responsive and helpful! ## Expectations for PhD Students The expectations are reasonable and typically for a PhD student. You will be responsible for large-scale structural fabrication, testing, and data processing. You may be exposed to finite element work as well. Dr. Bayrak has post docs that are incredibly helpful in guiding you. You have weekly meetings with your post doc and another one with the Lab Staff team. ## Funding & Support There is full support for the student. Dr. Bayrak had anywhere from 7-15 students at once fully funded. Never during my time as his GRA was I ever worried or concern regarding my funding. This was such an incredible reassurance. On top of this, Dr. Bayrak also advocated within the CAEE department at UT for higher student pay. He kids are also graduate students, so he can relate incredibly towards this struggle. I was also gifted a fellowship during my time at UT. This fellowship did not take away from my GRA funding which was so incredible. ## Research I personally thought the research was awesome! You are working on code changes with TxDOT and working on precast innovations. The projects are already chosen. You will not need to go through the effort of finding a project for yourself with Dr. Bayrak. They have a queue of projects with TxDOT with certain research goals. However, it is up to you to figure out how you are going to achieve that goal. You design your specimens, testing frame, and such. ## Lab Culture You will most likely work M,W,F at Ferguson Structural Lab. Prepared to get your steps and work-out in. It is a physical job especially in the summer since the lab does not have air conditioning. Unfortunately, if you are physically disabled in anyways, I am unsure if the lab work would be fitting. However, please don't let this discourage you. The lab is not accessible, however, there are research opportunities that are computer based.
