    ## Advisor Style & Mentorship
Prof. Yi usually would assign one project to one student to work on at one time. Student can find Prof. Yi to discuss the project basically whenever the student is prepared and feels like to discuss. Prof. Yi usually responds to the messages from students very quickly. However, since he is busy like all the professors, he seldom asks students to discuss with him but encourages students to go to him positively. So, if the student is not so self-motivated, he or she would receive little supervision from Prof. Yi.

    ## Expectations for PhD Students
The requirement for a PhD degree in a theory group in Department of physics at USTC is usually two first-authored published papers. It usually takes five years for PhD students to graduate, same as the department average. Prof. Yi doesn't expect students to work late or on weekends, nor expect them to be at the office on workdays. In his opinion, it is one's own business to choose how hard one works.

    ## Funding & Support
During my stay, all the students don't have to worry about their funding at all. Prof. Yi sends his students to conferences every year and encourages academic communications.

    ## Research
The research group is like a family. Students are like brothers and sisters (and in China we call each other brothers and sisters). I think Prof. Yi would like to host students for a short or long-term visit and also for a summer internship.

    ## Lab Culture
The research field in the lab is cold atom theory. Prof. Yi is a well-known player in the community of cold atom physics in China. He was once the chair of a top conference on cold atom physics in China. Thus, the connections to other cold atom groups in China are very good. But note that it is basically only in China and in the field of cold atom physics.

Usually Prof. Yi would assign a different topic after a student has finished a project. He tends to give students projects rather than have them select their own. There is one thing about the research project I do not like so much. The objective of the project of his proposal is usually not so clear at the beginning. He just tells student to calculate something, and it seems that sometimes he himself is not so sure about what to expect about the results at first. It is sometimes annoying for student to calculate something while not knowing what it is for.

    ## Additional Information
Though he is sometimes busy, he is kind and cares for his students from heart.

    Yes, I recommend this PI.
